Webmaster Tips for Viewing the Site
We tested this site with over 55 combinations of web browsers and operating systems, including several Linux, Windows and Mac OS variants. What we found were the best overall browser combinations for viewing this site. If you don't care about all the technical jargon, then the summary is this: Don't use Internet Explorer. It's best if you use Chrome, Safari and the latest version of Firefox - 3.6.8. Firstly, they have the most advanced and best Javascript rendering engines, which means this site (well, actually any site) will run faster. Also, they are less susceptible attacks. Older Firfox versions works too, but so far the fonts we wanted to use didn't download with the older versions.
We tried to work out all the kinks in the screen rendering, but the reality is that you can never ever solve all the issues because despite so called standards, the browser war is still being fought.
For the technically minded, we use CSS 3 to download the fonts we want to your machine. There's nothing malicious about that - in fact, you'll see that more and more in the future from most websites It's intended for web designers to be able to use a wide variety of fonts without being cornered into using only a handful of "websafe" fonts. We haven't implemented HTML 5 yet because very few browsers have implemented much of that yet - but we will be switching to the HTML 5 video rendering tag as soon as it matures enough to fully trust it and it will fully support all the codecs out there in the wild. For now we have to settle for embedded objects and, dare I say it, iframes! Well, you do what you gotta do...
Combinations we recommend:
- Safari 4.0 Win XP
- Opera 9.80 Ubuntu 9.10
- Chrome 5.0.375.125 Ubuntu 8.04
- Konqueror 4.4 Arch
- Safari 532.4 Arch
- Safari 5.0.1 Windows 7
- Safari 5.0 Mac OS X 10.5
- Firefox 3.6.7 Mac OS X 10.5
- Opera 10.6 Debian
- Opera 9.80 Win XP
- Firefox 3.6.3 Win XP
Basically the latest versions of Safari, Opera, Chrome and Firefox work well on any OS. For you IE users, well, you'll have to wait until the folks in Redmond catch up to the rest of the world. IE 9 is due out....2011? We'll see, but until then, do yourself a favor and download Google Chrome or the latest version of Firefox. If you'd like, Opera works well too, but beware, it does not support NTLM so you won't be able to use it in most corporate environments...
